As always, each example below is broken down word-by-word to help build a strong foundation. Remember that writing things out helps reinforce memory!
7. Nós não sabemos.
We don’t know.
nós – we
não – not, don’t, no
sabemos – know (from saber, to know)
8. Como você se chama?
What is your name? / Literal meaning: How do you call yourself?
como – how?
você – you
se – yourself
chama - call / are called (from chamar, to call, to name)
9. Não há tempo agora.
There’s no time now.
não – not, no
há – there is, there are (from haver, to have, to exist)
tempo – time, weather (depending on the context)
agora - now
10. A senhora me entende?
Do you understand me? / Do you understand me, miss? (formal feminine)
a – the (feminine singular definite article)
senhora – lady, ma’am, Mrs.
me – me
entende - understand (from entender, to understand)
11. Muito prazer.
Pleased to meet you. / Nice to meet you. Literal meaning: much pleasure
muito – much, very, a lot
prazer - pleasure
12. Eu estudo para aprender.
I study in order to learn./ I study to learn.
eu – I
estudo – study (from estudar, to study)
para – for, to, in order to
aprender – to learn
